FAQ – Scroll down for the builds

Q: Why Guard 1?

When playing Charge Blade, after blocking an attack, you may press Triangle + Circle (PS4) to counter with Super Amped Elemental Discharge. However, you cannot do this if the blocked attack was too strong and your character slides back after blocking. You can increase block stability by charging the CB shield, by blocking using guard points instead of holding R2, and by getting Guard skill (these all stack).

It turns out that by getting Guard 1, almost every attack in the game can be blocked with small/medium knockback if you have charged shield and use guard points, allowing countering with SAED. Without Guard 1, many strong attacks and even some roars (Bazel, Diablos, Nergigante) can’t be blocked and countered using CB.

Q: Why Focus 3?

Focus improves two aspects of Charge Blade. First, you fill phials faster from attacking in sword mode. With no Focus, the fastest way to get red phials is charged double slash, shield thrust, charged double slash. With level 3 Focus (doesn’t work with 2 or 1), you can use a faster combo of advancing/weak slash, charged double slash, roundslash finisher. It also allows some longer combos to charge your shield and end with full phials, demonstrated in this video.

The second (minor) benefit of Focus is shortening the charge time for charged double slash and condensed elemental slash. The exact frame data for this can be seen in this video. Focus 3 is universally used by CB speedrunners, even those that use elemental CB builds.

Q: Attack or Affinity augment for Diablos Tyrannis II?

Short answer: they are basically the same so choose whichever one you like more.

Long answer: Attack wins by a very slight amount. In the SAED-heavy playstyle that speedrunners use, phial damage makes up a large chunk of your damage output, and phials cannot crit and are therefore unaffected by affinity. Phial damage is affected by raw attack, so it turns out that Attack augment gives a bigger boost to your damage even over the 10% Affinity first augment. You can observe this by playing with the augments in the builder links below: Attack augment gives very slightly less true raw, but noticeably more SAED phial damage.

Q: Why not Attack Boost 7, Agitator, or Peak Performance to maximize impact phial damage?

In patch 2.0, phial damage scaling for impact phials was adjusted to use a new formula. Basically, base attack from your weapon and attack from all other sources (non-elemental boost, attack boost, food buffs, power talon, etc) are weighted differently when calculating phial damage, and the base attack from your weapon is weighted twice as much as attack from other sources. What this boils down to is that the difference between 4 attack and 7 attack is only 1 damage per SAED phial, instead of 2-3 damage before the patch. So in my opinion, going farther than 4 attack and non-elemental boost just for phial damage isn’t worth it, except on particular matchups where Weakness Exploit is bad/less good (e.g Lavasioth, Deviljho, Lunastra).

As a corollary, this is why Attack augment is still quite good since it increases the base attack of the weapon and benefits from the higher weight in calculating phial damage.

Q: Why Handicraft and Weakness Exploit on Diablos Tyrannis II?

Related to the above question. Once you have Artillery 3, Capacity Boost, Attack Boost 4, and Non-Elemental Boost that’s sufficient to maximize phial damage. After that, I focus on improving the physical damage of the CB. When using SAED, the physical damage dealt by the axe hits can easily exceed the damage from phials if hitting a weak point. It’s important to get Weakness Exploit 3 so you can’t negative crit, and Handicraft 2 is very cheap to slot in from Death Stench Legs and lets you stay in blue sharpness longer.

Did you know?

This site isn’t just for speedrunners! You can replace Attack or Expert jewels with Vitality (Health Boost) in almost all of the builds below to create a defensive build.

If you have it, Taroth Strongarm ‘Horn’ (rarity 7) from Kulve Taroth can replace Diablos Tyrannis II. Both weapons are identical except for Taroth ‘Horn’ giving 10 more defense.

Required Event Equipment: Arch-Tempered Teostra, Arch-Tempered Kulve Taroth
Recommended augments: Health Regen & Affinity

Notes:
This build uses no Handicraft, but 80% affinity and Master’s Touch effectively gives it 150 hits of blue sharpness when hitting weak spots. However, sharpness loss from guarding is not mitigated.

#Defensive Diablos[PC or Console]

Builder link

Weapon: Diablos Tyrannis II
Required Event Equipment: n/a
Recommended augments: Health Regen & Attack

Notes:
I generally tell people they shouldn’t use Earplugs on CB since you want to be blocking or guardpointing roars to combo into SAED/AED, but nevertheless here is a decent Earplugs 5 build for CB, with Health Boost 2 as a bonus. Alternate build with Handicraft 2 but less Attack Boost and Health Boost.

#Agitator 1[PC or Console]

Builder link

Weapon: Diablos Tyrannis II
Required Event Equipment: Arch-tempered Lunastra, Arch-tempered Kushala
Recommended augments: Health Regen & Attack

Even more excessive than the above build.

#Anti-Lunastra (Poverty)[PC or Console]

Builder link

Weapon: Diablos Tyrannis II
Required Event Equipment: n/a
Recommended augments: Health Regen & Attack

Notes:
Optionally, swap Attack jewels for Health Boost. Since this uses one Lunastra armor, if you’re struggling to kill Lunastra for the first time, put Windproof Charm III on the All-purpose Flexible Charm build and replace Attack jewel with Health boost.

There’s some random guy saying that Diablos Nero Gauntlets and Nergigante Coil for the poverty build is better than Kaiser and Damascus, because he thinks AB3 is better overall in damage than WE3. (WE2 AB3 vs WE3 AB1)

    Can you help me?

Sorry for my English, non native speaker still learning.

Hey man, I really apreciate your work, you have teached me a lot about charge blade optimization. I’ve starded to farm behemoth to get the only decoration my build is missing (capacity boost) and I would like to know if you are planning to make an anti extremoth build. I would love to know your opinion about evade extender, health boost and tool specialist when facing extremoth. When the event comes, hopefully I’ll have my magazine jewel.

Thanks again for all the builds man, you are doing everyones life easier.

I personally did not use CB for hunting extremoth so I’m not sure how much advice I can offer (I used hbg tank build with glutton hbg as the aggro taker). I think you definitely should use health boost 3, guard up, and guard 3 or even 5. I would even consider divine blessing or defense augment on weapon.

FYI I don’t think behemoth is great for farming decorations. your best bet is probably tier 2 tempered monsters with 3/4/5 rewards or the arch tempered jagras event plus melding.

Thanks for the fast reply man, Sorry I noticed one month later but I don’t understand much about how this sites comment section work.

Its been a month or so since I asked you my question and I have done a lot of testing with Behemoth. Thanks to rngesus I now have 3 magazine jewels so now I can test all of your builds and they are awesome. I have them all saved in my loadouts and they are really usefull.

You are right, Behemoth is a bad monster to farm, but thanks to him I got the 3 magazine jewels and all the decos on the game and the fight is fun so I don’t regret choosing to farm him instead of T2 tempered monsters. I even managed to solo Extreme Behemoth.

Anyways, there are still some matchups that I had to make different builds because of the Monster shenanigans, like Lunastra and kushala i always need windproof 5 or Kush armour to not cart against the nova or not be blown away by Kushalas wind aura, or Xenojiva where i need heatguard to not melt in the lava poodles, or Vaal hazak where effluvia resistance 3 is mandatory. I would love to see the sets you use for these troublesome monsters.

As usual, thanks for your efforts. You are doing gods work.

Why not Charge Prolonger? I feel that skill very usefull and give a most comfortable gameplay, have the shield charged for 4:00 mins instead of 3:00 (Consideryng capacity up) feels great, same with the sword

    • velohack says:

I agree. While Power Prolonger may be a net DPS loss considering the alternatives, I think it’s a worthwhile cost for the “convenience/comfort” factor. Less time micro-managing timers and more time with your attention on the fight. Still, I wouldn’t grab it unless I had it in decorations and I had plenty of slots to spare.

Are there any plans to update the guide with the new CB’s from AT Kulve? Ice is obviously good, but are any of the others worth grinding for?

I’ll have new builds before the end of the year. Ice is the best of them for sure, and the rest of the elemental ones I think are all still worth getting as they are better than any elemental CB’s before them. The blast one is really bad, and the para one is probably also bad but better than blast

Thank you for the great work, looking forward to the update! It would be very helpful if you could also provide an expert opinion on which monsters would be optimal to hunt with which CB. For example, my short research shows Ice CB may be optimal for Kirin over the Fire one, due to significant jump in elemental power, compred to hitzone elemental values on Kirin’s head. In any case, your work is greatly appreciated!

Q1: Why WE3 in the “THUNDER ANTI-KULVE (KJARR)”-Build? Kulves only weakpoints are the forearms, the chests and the horns (which are unaffected by thunder-damage) – or am I wrong? Instead I suggest Maximum Might 3 for more Affinity…
Q2: Do you prefer white sharpness over Critical Boost for more elemental Phial damage? Which one is better?

    Like

    • stripedypaper says:

      1. All of kulves body is weak when she is molten
      2. neither of those affect phial damage. I usually try to balance both in elemental builds since they have high affinity and kjarr weapons reach white easily

      Like

      • ChrisB says:

        1. The only problem is, that she does not get molten so easy like the former normal Kulve, so the advantage of the element does not prog EVERY time (I thought about switching to the water element build, because she has always the same weakness to water.
        2. Are you sure? I thought, I saw different phial damage numbers on monsters per SAED. So some phials do crit and others not – and therefore the criteria boost does have an influence on those phials.

        Like

      • stripedypaper says:

what you are seeing is not phials critting. Elemental phials are affected by hitzones (unlike impact phials which are fixed damage) so they will hit different damage on different monster parts. Charge blade phials cannot crit (but switch axe phials can).
I’m not going to change my antikulve build based on my experiences fighting kulve but you are free to swap weakness exploit for something else.

First and foremost, props to Stripedypaper for this really useful guide.

I play on PC and, so far, I’v found only one attack deco (besides the one given during the quest) and 0 charger decos.

With the decos I was lucky enough to find, I made the following build:
    Dragonking eyepatch
    Chest/waist damascus b
    Legs/arms Drachen a
    Handicraft charm 3.

    Critical eye 5
    Attack boost 4
    Weakness exploit 3
    Focus 3
    Artillery 3
    Handicraft 3
    Critical boost 1
    Elementless boost
    Capacity boost.

Do you think this build is good enough?
Soon AT kushala will be released on PC; kushala y arms is identical compared to damascus b chest.

Is it possible to switch drachen arms and damascus b chest and use kushala y arms and anothet chest (I can’t figure out which one)?

Honestly I dont think you need a gamma build for survival. I’m not the best CB around, but theres not a bunch to the set that is really useful outside of Vaal hunts. If you have effluvia decos in you inventory you might be better off socketing them imho than trying to build a set solely for Vaal.

With that said, if you are intent on making a Vaal gamma set, I would say stick with the chest, waist, and legs. This gives you:
Recovery speed up x3 (good with set bonus)
Peak performance x2 ( not used a lot, but helpful rarely)
Recovery up x1 (more heals plz)
Dragon attack x1 (useless in DT builds)

After that you have to use a lot of slots for effluvia resistance that you would otherwise use for better skills. Really, if you want to farm AT Vaal you would be better off with the alpha or bet armor to get the effluvia skills easier

Thanks a lot for this post! Unfortunately I haven’t been blessed with a magazine or any artillery jewels. I feel limited without those artilleries…

artillery doesn’t work for elemental phials (they use the corresponding elemental attack skill instead). Critical element also doesn’t affect phials since they don’t crit so it’s just a nice to have effect that isn’t worth sacrificing behemoth set for.

    Daora arms y (3x artillery)

So I’ve not gotten a magazine gem or a guard gem or an artillery gem, but I’ve got all the pieces for the handicraft build and other things, like the flexible build with no event equipment… At the moment I have Teostra gamma helm in place of the dragon king patch, etc. The artillery charm is definitely what I’ve got lately, but is dodogama beta capacity boost and guard +1 from uragaan beta leaving a heap of damage on the table? I’ve been augmenting pieces like mad and am trying to triangulate, as it were, to avoid burn out. Is it better to roll with the poverty build pieces then do without those skills?

I do have the equipment necessery and most jewels though. Should I start playing with the newer gear even though I don’t have the jewels to make the actual build?

Just an observation. I noticed the site is called “mhwbuilds” but only CB are avaiable. Do you plan on making builds for other weapons?

to be honest i don’t know why people says that Focus is mandatory with CB, it isn’t… charging it faster is cool but isn’t that cool when you need more mobility than charging it fast… also by charging it “fast enough” you can get a bounce and get hit or killed free just because of that… never happened to me before, but sure for other people maybe… so Focus for me isn’t mandatory… you can put some critical boost there that at the end i’ll work better

Need help with AT Lunastra. The Kjárr anti luna doesn’t have windproof or fire res and the poverty build seems kinda weak in general although I haven’t tried it yet. Her supernova is too difficult to deal with, the fire damage is insane.

not sure what to suggest other than replacing some expert with health boost. Wind res is helpful but not required as charge blade resists weak wind on several attacks (reload, double slash, all axe attacks)
